This year I tried something different with our holiday ham: instead of roasting a whole or half ham, I removed slices from the bone and baked them. It turned out to be the quickest, easiest ham dinner I’ve made. We liked it so much I started buying smaller hams to slice and bake for sandwiches and fast weeknight meals.

Note: this method works well for sliced ham and can be adapted for ham steaks, though the recipe below is written for slices.

Quick Tips

If your ham came with a glaze packet, you can use that instead of the brown sugar-honey mix. In summer, brushing slices with BBQ sauce is a tasty alternative.

For large quantities, a sheet pan works well. Leftover ham freezes nicely for future meals.

How to Cook Ham Slices in the Oven

By: Dee
A quick and easy method to reheat or prepare sliced ham in the oven for meals or sandwiches.
Prep Time: 10
Cook Time: 20
Total Time: 30
Servings: 10

Ingredients

  • 4 pound ham fully cooked, spiral cut
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • ¼ cup water

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 300°F (150°C).
  • Cut slices from the bone and arrange them in a 13×9 baking dish; slices may overlap slightly.
  • Stir together brown sugar and honey, then sprinkle the mixture over the ham, adding between layers if overlapping.
  • Pour water into the bottom of the dish to keep the ham moist.
  • Cover with foil and bake 20–30 minutes, or until heated through. For a slightly caramelized top, remove foil for the last 5–10 minutes. Serve warm.

Notes

Use a baking sheet for larger amounts of ham.

You can substitute the ham’s glaze packet or brush on BBQ sauce instead of the brown sugar mixture.

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3–4 days. Freeze extras for up to 3 months for best flavor.
