I’ve been meaning to write this post for a long time. We moved into our new home in Ontario last June after years spent renovating our previous house. This place required less work than our Nova Scotia home, but there were still plenty of updates to tackle. Over the past year we’ve made significant progress and the house finally feels like home.
I’ll share before-and-after photos as we finish rooms. The master bedroom was one of the first spaces we completed. In fact, work began on it before we arrived in Ontario thanks to help from my parents, sisters and extended family.
The previous owner was an older woman moving into a retirement home, and the house was dated with no recent cosmetic updates. All the bedrooms had carpet, which we removed and replaced with laminate flooring.
My mom snapped a few before photos on her iPhone to show me. This is our master bedroom.

It needed paint, new flooring and curtains. The closet still needs work, which will be the subject of a separate post.

And here is the after. We painted the walls Benjamin Moore Silver Fox and installed grey curtains to cover the windows. The room gets beautiful natural light.

In our previous home I had recently redecorated the master bedroom, so I brought the same furniture and bedding here. I love the black-and-white scheme—classic and simple.

I chose laminate flooring because it’s affordable and easy to maintain compared with hardwood. John wasn’t thrilled at first, but he adjusted quickly.

This master bedroom is smaller than our last, but our furniture fits without feeling cramped. We don’t have a TV in the room—if we ever add one it would need to be wall-mounted.

Instead of watching TV before bed, I read, which is probably healthier. I used to stay up too late watching favorite shows.

Although the windows are large, the curtains block light effectively so the room gets pleasantly dark at night—no room-darkening blinds needed.

The transformation is dramatic compared to when we first took the keys. It truly feels like home now.

I still plan to replace the dated doors to the room and closet and give the closet a full makeover, but that will require careful planning. We’re also waiting for the electrician to update a few two-prong outlets to three-prong for safety.
Watch for more before-and-after posts coming soon—I’ll share the rest of the rooms we’ve completed.
