I share many DIY recipes using essential oils, from a homemade shower cleaner to face serums tailored to your skin type and natural headache balms. The blends I reach for most often, however, are diffuser recipes that use lavender and other complementary oils.
My first experience with essential oils was diffusing lavender to improve my sleep. Like many people, I used to wake up two or three times each night—sometimes because the dog moved, my partner shifted, or my thoughts raced about the next day. I was tired and in a fog. Once I started diffusing lavender, I began sleeping through the night. That change felt like a miracle and sparked my ongoing interest in essential oils. Over the years I’ve found that lavender not only supports restful sleep but can also soothe anxious feelings, deter flies and mosquitoes, ease headaches, and more.
Diffuser Recipes Organized by Use
Because lavender is versatile, I’ve organized the diffuser blends by their therapeutic benefits. If you have a cold, see the “Congestion, Colds & Coughs” section. If bugs are a problem, try the “Bug Repellent” blends. If sleep is elusive, check the “Sleep” section for lavender-led blends to help you rest through the night.
Below are the 10 types of recipes you’ll find, with several blends in each category. There’s also a printable with additional recipes you can use for quick reference.
- sleep
- stress relief
- anxiety
- uplifting
- congestion, colds & coughs
- allergies
- headaches
- nausea
- deodorize
- bug repellent
How to use diffuser recipes?
- Choose a blend – There are more than 40 lavender diffuser blends below. Pick one that fits your mood or need. If you don’t have a listed oil, substitute a similar-scented oil or try another recipe that matches what you do have.
- Add water to your diffuser – Stop filling below the internal max line. Ultrasonic diffusers need space at the top so water can move and form a fine mist. Too much water reduces mist output; less water yields more mist.
- Add essential oils to the water – The recipes are written for a 300 ml diffuser but can be adjusted for different sizes (see the next section for conversion tips).
- Replace the cover on the diffuser.
- Plug in and turn it on.
If you don’t have a diffuser, you can still diffuse essential oils using other methods like inhalers, cotton balls, or simmering a small pot of water with oils.
How many drops of essential oil should I use in my diffuser?
The recipes below are for a 300 ml diffuser but can be scaled.
150 ml and smaller diffusers: halve the recipe so you use about 3–4 drops total.
200–400 ml diffusers: follow the recipes as written (about 5–8 drops total).
500 ml and larger diffusers: double the recipe so you use roughly 10–15 drops total.
