The Classic Cosmopolitan. Oh how I ADORE you!

I could reminisce about my Sex and the City watching days—okay, truth: my still-watching Sex and the City days—but I won’t go down that rabbit hole. Instead, here’s a little personal story: when my daughter was born eleven years ago, I panicked as maternity leave came to an end. How could I go back to work and leave my firstborn with strangers? My degree in horticulture didn’t lend itself to evening shifts, and I still wanted to bring home a little bacon. I needed work that fit around family life.
So I found a part-time job bartending. It was perfect: two or three nights a week, earning some income while keeping evenings open for my kids. The mixology and wine-pairing skills were lovely extras. Bartending also made family gatherings more fun—playing bartender at holidays became a tradition. Cosmopolitans took on a special role as a festive favorite among the women in our family. They’re the perfect balance of tart and sweet, and they look beautiful in that sophisticated martini glass.
While I can’t claim expertise in everything, I will happily claim a fair bit of experience behind a bar. One of my all-time favorite cocktails is The Classic Cosmopolitan.

This martini is simple to make, but a few details elevate it from amateur to pro level.
I have a bar set like this. Plus, any purchases from this link go back to Savor with Jennifer to purchase ingredients for recipe creation at no additional charge to you.
First, start with chilled ingredients. I keep vodka in the freezer and refrigerate the orange liqueur and cranberry juice. Pouring warm liquids over ice causes excessive melting, diluting the drink too quickly.
Second, shake until the shaker is noticeably cold to the touch. If it’s metal, it will look almost frosty. You’re not trying to create a slush, but you do want small ice crystals to form so the drink becomes silky and smooth on the palate.
Third, use quality ingredients and balanced proportions: a good vodka, a reliable orange liqueur such as Cointreau, freshly squeezed lemon or lime juice, and cranberry juice. I prefer a touch more cranberry and citrus than some recipes—this brightens and balances the drink.
I choose lemon or lime depending on the garnish. For Christmas, lime juice with a lime wheel and cranberries makes a festive presentation. The rest of the year I often use a lemon twist with lemon juice. Both are excellent; trying them side by side can be a fun tasting experiment.
Start by filling a cocktail shaker half full of ice. Add the chilled ingredients, cover, and shake 10–15 seconds until very cold and small ice crystals appear. Strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with a lemon twist, lime wheel, and/or a few cranberries. Enjoy.
