With the holidays approaching, finding thoughtful, handmade gifts can make the season feel more personal and joyful. I love creating homemade presents because they show care, are customizable, and let me enjoy craft time. This year I returned to a simple favorite: all-natural candles made with beeswax and essential oils. They are surprisingly easy to make and make beautiful, chemical-free gifts for friends and family.
Handmade candles are a great option for gifting because you control the ingredients and scent. I prefer essential oils for fragrance, avoiding artificial perfumes. For these candles I used a warm winter blend of sweet orange, spruce, and clove — a cozy mix that works well in candles, sugar scrubs, and body butters. The aroma is festive without being overpowering.
To make the candles more special I added watercolor-style printable gift tags designed by an artist. Printing your own tags on card stock and trimming them by hand adds a handmade touch that complements the jar and ribbon. These small details elevate the presentation and make a simple candle feel like a carefully considered present.

Materials
- 1 lb (about 4 cups) beeswax pellets
- Candle wicks
- Essential oils — sweet orange, spruce, clove (or your preferred blend)
- Glass jars or other heat-safe containers
- Printable gift tags and ribbon for finishing
Instructions
- Pour the beeswax pellets into a mason jar or heat-safe measuring cup reserved for crafts. Using a dedicated vessel for wax makes cleanup easier and prevents contamination of kitchenware.
- Melt the wax. In a microwave, heat in 2–3 minute increments, stirring between intervals until fully melted (about 9 minutes total). Alternatively, melt the wax in a double boiler or a slow cooker for gentler, hands-free heating.
- When the wax is fully melted, add essential oils. For the quantities above, try approximately 40 drops sweet orange, 10 drops spruce, and 5 drops clove. Adjust to your preference, remembering that the amount of oil should be balanced with the amount of wax to avoid an overly strong scent.
- Prepare your containers. Choose glass jars, teacups, or thrifted containers that are heat-safe and clean. These will become your candle vessels.
- Attach the wick. Dip the metal base of the wick into the melted wax, press it into the center bottom of the jar, and hold until set. Wick stickers or a dab of hot glue can help secure the base in place.
- Stabilize the wick. Lay two skewers or pencils across the top of the jar and center the wick between them so it stays upright and centered while the wax cools.
- Pour the wax carefully into each jar, leaving a little headspace at the top. If you’re concerned about air bubbles or sinkholes, let the wax cool slightly before pouring or pour in two stages, topping up after the first layer hardens.
- Allow the candles to cool and harden completely. This can take several hours. Once set, remove the skewers and trim the wick to about 1/2 inch above the wax for optimal burning.
- Finish and gift. Add ribbon, a printable tag, and any small extras like a sprig of dried greenery. Consider pairing candles in a small gift basket with bath salts or a handwritten note for a personal touch.
Handmade candles are versatile, practical, and personal. They make thoughtful holiday gifts that recipients will use and appreciate. For an elevated presentation, group a candle with a small jar of bath salts, a cloth napkin, or a gift card. Small bundles feel luxurious and show extra care in gift-giving.
