Tips & Tricks
Read these tips to get the best coating and crunch. Pretzels can overcook quickly, so watch them closely.
- Follow the step-by-step instructions for your chosen cooking method to avoid mistakes.
- Butter gives more flavor than oil, but oil can be used if you prefer.
- Use the ingredient amounts as listed for consistent results.
- If using an air fryer, note that cook times vary by model — check early and often.
How to Make the Best Garlic and Onion Pretzels
- Ingredients: mini twist pretzels, garlic powder, onion powder, and melted butter.
- Best tool: a large zip-top bag. Tossing in a bag gives the most even coating and is easiest to shake, compared with mixing in a bowl where seasonings tend to settle.
- Any hard pretzel shape works: twists, sticks, snaps, or crisps.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5 days — though they rarely last that long!
Recommended Air Fryers
These are commonly used models that perform well for small-batch snacks and recipe testing.
We test recipes on the air fryers we own. Choose a model that fits your capacity and needs.
Best Cooking Method for Garlic and Onion Pretzels
There are several ways to finish these pretzels. We prefer the air fryer for texture, but oven and microwave options work too.
Prepping
Method one — Bowl: Combine pretzels, butter, and seasonings in a large bowl and stir gently to coat. Stir carefully so the powders do not settle at the bottom. If they do, use a spatula to redistribute them.
Method two — Zip-top bag (preferred): Add pretzels to a gallon-size zip-top bag, pour in the melted butter, seal, and shake to coat. Keep air in the bag so pretzels can move freely. Add garlic and onion powder, seal, and shake again until evenly coated.
Cooking
Method one — Air Fryer (preferred): Preheat to 350°F if your air fryer has a preheat setting. Work in batches to avoid overcrowding (about 2 cups per batch, adjust for your basket size). Minimal overlap is fine. Air fry at 350°F for 3–5 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through. Timing varies by model, so watch carefully to avoid overcooking.
Method two — Oven: Spread coated pretzels on a baking sheet in a single layer. Bake at 300°F for 10–15 minutes, turning halfway for even browning. Check periodically since oven times vary.
Method three — Microwave: Place coated pretzels in a large microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 1 minute, stir, then repeat two more times (about 3 minutes total), stirring between each interval. Spread on parchment to cool. This method is quick but produces a different texture than air frying or baking.
These three methods are the most reliable for consistent results.
