Sweet and Savory Halloween Snack Board

Halloween Snack Board – Perfect for Celebrating

There’s a crispness in the air that means Halloween is near—time for spooky decorations, cozy gatherings and lots of treats. Whether your plans are big or small this year, this Halloween snack board is an easy, festive option for a party or a family movie night.

If you love peanut butter, you’ll especially enjoy the creamy peanut butter dip. It pairs wonderfully with orange cheese crackers and celery sticks, and it’s just as good spread on crackers or scooped up with pretzels or apple slices.

Cheese boards (or snack boards) are wonderfully flexible—swap in what you have on hand or tailor the flavors to your crowd.

This post was created for #HalloweenTreatsWeek. Some samples were provided by sponsors; opinions are entirely my own.

Decorating a Halloween Snack Board

I picked up most of my decorations at Target’s dollar spot: plastic spider rings, bats, eyeballs, gray webbing and a small cauldron bowl. I used a black slate board I already owned and arranged the snacks for a cute, spooky display.

This snack board was my contribution to the 2020 #HalloweenSweetsWeek, where 30 food bloggers shared Halloween recipes and giveaways throughout the week.

What’s on a Halloween Snack Board?

Snack boards are simple to personalize. Here’s what I included on mine to balance sweet, salty and savory, and to add fun colors and textures:

  • Peanut Butter Dip – a savory-sweet dip made from crunchy peanut butter, cream cheese, brown sugar, honey and sea salt
  • Cheez-Its – orange cheese crackers, great with the peanut butter dip
  • Celery sticks – a crisp vessel for dipping
  • Cheese “casket” – a block of Pepper Jack shaped into a casket with an American cheese slice for lettering
  • Black olives – dark accents for a spooky look
  • Halloween Oreos – decorated with candy eyes using a bit of orange filling as glue
  • Gummy worms, candy corn and Halloween M&M’s – candies for sweetness and color
  • Pistachios and wasabi peas – salty and spicy contrasts; the green color is festive
  • Witch brooms – pretzel sticks paired with frayed string cheese
  • Dipped pretzel rods – pretzel rods dipped in vanilla coating and sprinkles
  • Monster-shaped veggie chips – for a crunchy, playful veggie option

How to Make Edible Witch Brooms

These simple witch brooms are made by inserting a pretzel stick into the top of a small piece of string cheese. Peel the bottom of the cheese slightly to create a frayed broom look. Thinner pretzel sticks work best; thicker ones can split the cheese. Tie a small chive around the top if you want a more finished look.

Peanut Butter Dip Recipe

I wanted a dip with peanut butter character—less like a sweet dessert dip and more like a spread you could pile on a cracker or scoop with celery. This version is slightly savory with a hint of sweetness.

Peanut Butter Dip

Peanut Butter Dip

This peanut butter dip was the centerpiece of my Halloween snack board. It’s great for celery, apple slices, cheese crackers and pretzels.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup extra crunchy peanut butter
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt (coarse preferred)

Instructions

  1. Mix all ingredients together until smooth and combined. Adjust salt or sweetness to taste.
  2. Serve in a bowl with celery, crackers, pretzels, apples or cheese.

Notes: For a fluffier dip, use more cream cheese and whip it before adding the peanut butter. Creamy peanut butter works well, too.

Yield: about 1.5 cups. Prep time: 5 minutes. Calories: approx. 146 kcal per serving.

I loved how this dip looked and tasted on the board. There was a little left over and it made a delicious toast topping the next morning.
