Spring is here, and what better way to celebrate than with my Green Superfood Smoothie—bursting with kiwi, spinach, avocado, grapefruit, mango and a touch of spirulina!
To me, spring represents renewal—a natural time to reset. While many choose New Year’s Day for fresh starts, I prefer the first days of spring. After a long winter, the world comes alive with color, flowers and fresh produce, making it the perfect moment to recalibrate, boost energy and feel rejuvenated.
Lately I’ve been running on empty—tired, out of sync and not sleeping well. That lack of rest has made it harder to concentrate and stay even-tempered. Combine low iron and monthly hormonal swings, and I become an angry, impatient version of myself. My partner jokingly calls me the Hulk during those spells, and honestly, it’s hard to argue. When sleep deserts me, everything feels urgent and overwhelming. Recently I even sprinted after a departing streetcar in full dramatic fashion—arms flailing and all—rather than shrugging it off. Not my finest moment.
So, I’m taking intentional steps to reclaim balance. First, I’m protecting my sleep: no devices in bed and prioritizing rest. Even a few more hours makes a big difference. I also manage chronic anemia, so I’m always looking for plant-based ways to boost iron and nutrients.
Smoothies are our go-to breakfast almost every morning: convenient, nutrient-dense and an easy way to pack fruits and vegetables into a busy routine. I’m joining the 30 Day Green Smoothie Challenge hosted by Simple Green Smoothies to add more structure to our usual “throw-in-whatever-we-have” approach. The challenge begins April 1, and I’ll share daily progress on Instagram. Before the challenge officially starts, though, I’m indulging in this mighty Green Superfood Smoothie—my way of embracing both spring and my inner Hulk.

Green Superfood Smoothie
Ingredients
- ½ cup water
- 1 ½ cups freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
- 2 cups spinach
- 1 teaspoon spirulina
- 2 kiwis
- 1 avocado
- ½ cup frozen mango chunks
Method

Place all ingredients in the blender.

Blend on high until smooth.

It will be very thick. Add more juice or some water to thin the mixture if that’s your preference.
