Ranch dressing became a favorite in many kitchens decades ago for its creamy, herb-forward taste. It’s still popular today because it’s versatile and comforting.

Originally used mainly as a salad dressing or a dip, ranch quickly found its way into sandwiches, snack seasonings, and countless recipes. When ranch-flavored snacks and boxed seasoning packets became widespread, cooks started adapting that flavor for everything from roasted meats to snack mixes.

When I first learned the ingredients in homemade ranch dressing mix I was surprised at how simple they are. Most of them are probably already in your spice cabinet. The main ingredient that may be less common is powdered buttermilk—useful for making a creamy dressing or dip. If you want a dry seasoning only, omit the buttermilk powder and use the blend as a seasoning instead of a dressing base.

How Much Ranch Seasoning to Make Dressing?

  • 3 tablespoons of this mix equals one standard packet of ranch seasoning. Use that ratio when substituting the homemade mix in recipes that call for a store-bought packet.
  • To make almost a pint of ranch dressing: mix 3 tablespoons of the Homemade Ranch Dressing Mix with 1/3 cup milk and 1 cup mayonnaise (or Greek-style yogurt).
  • To make a smaller batch: combine 1 tablespoon of mix with 1/3 cup milk and 1/3 cup mayonnaise or Greek yogurt. Stir well and chill for 15 minutes before serving to let the flavors meld.
